Non-tepreneuer Turned Mompreneuer

 IMG_0735

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a question every small child is asked at one point or another. When I was in the early elementary years, my answer would have been, “I want to be a bus driver so I can drive children around and make them smile!” Another answer I had later in life was, “I want to be a teacher so that I can educate and encourage the next generation.” And then even later I said, “I want to be a mom and stay at home with my children.” The VERY last answer…and I mean VERY last answer I would have given (even a year ago!!) is “I want to be an entepreneuer—to make and sell things.” The very thought of managing my own business frightened me! But here I am today doing the one thing I thought I’d never want to do!

Etsy shoo, Mom-owned businessMany people ask me where I came up with the idea of my Doodle Diapers. Let me share it with you! When I was pregnant with our second child (currently we have 3 little ones, ages 5, 3, and 1) some of my friends had a baby shower for me. One especially meaningful present I opened was a gift bag full of diapers, each with a special message on it—some with Bible verses, some with quotes about babies and parenthood. I generally used those diapers in the middle of the night or at a time of day when I needed something to bring a smile to my face—a sweet reminder of the blessing of motherhood, of God’s goodness, or something that just made me laugh! It was such a special gift, I started doing the same thing for some of my friends when I had time before a baby shower—writing little messages on diapers and just gifting them in a little gift bag.

Well, fast forward to this January. I was working on some diapers for a friend who was expecting her second child when the thought hit me: “Other people may want to give a gift like this but do not have the time to look up quotes or Scripture, write or type them all out, and figure out a way to package them. I should give others the opportunity to do something like this, too!” I found a way to package them cutely and Doodle Diapers was born! Now here I am today with a little business I absolutely love!!! I love reading the Scripture and quotes as I put them on the diapers…and to read them to my children. I love getting to make the little flower toppers I put on there. And I love to pray for each mom and dad who will receive Doodle Diapers—that they will be encouraged and have wisdom as they raise their little one (or little ONES ☺ I’ve done several boxes for twins ☺).

After I started this business, I have expanded based on customer’s suggestions—to make those little toppers into bows, to paint some of my boxes in chalkboard paint, and in the future I plan to have an option to personalize the boxes with a child’s name on it!

I’ve been very encouraged to see this tiny little idea flourish into a business that helps our family and is a joy to do each day!

  1. Kate- I love this inspiration to share the love of the Lord with baby and whomever is changing the diaper. what a sweet moment!

  2. What a cute idea. I photograph newborns and sometimes I get relatives booking sessions as shower gifts. I’ll have to keep you in mind as a suggestion for them.
