Behind the Scenes, Birdie B’s Etsy Shop

Hi I’m Tania, owner of birdie b’s children’s clothing.  I started birdie b’s in 2011 after much cajoling from friends and family. They insisted that I needed to offer my creations for people to buy instead of just admire. This was a huge undertaking for me since I had four children, the youngest being only 2 years old and still not sleeping through the night. Being the crazy woman that I am I decided to go for it!

I create everything you see at birdie b’s right here in my home studio. Being the creative person I am I typically do not have it this clean as I work on multiple projects at a time but I figured you wouldn’t want to see my messy piles.

Whether I am choosing a completely new creation or starting an order for a customer I typically start with my inspiration board. I am constantly adding cute pictures or swatches of fabric that I would like to play with. It may spark an idea or make me look at a new way of doing an old favorite. Then I head to my fabric selection. Choosing what colors or design can help me choose what pattern I may use or if I will make any modifications to my existing pattern.  I have a set group of patterns I like to work with but I am always on the lookout for more. I test and re-test patterns before offering them to my customers though. I want to be sure I make quality clothing that will last through everything a child can throw at it.

Then I get to the real work of cutting, piecing and sewing the garment together so it fits well, is comfortable and long lasting. I am typically doing all of this while feeding, refereeing, and entertaining children. Not to mention my breaks for homework, chef and chauffeuring duties. Luckily I work well in a chaotic environment!

One of my favorite parts of the process is when I receive a picture or a special message telling me how much a child loves her new birdie b’s. There is nothing better than learning that your creation has become a special outfit in a little ones wardrobe.
